Mr. Weathered is the Chief Engineer for the Airborne Systems technology area within the Research and Technology Directorate (RTD), comprising Langley’s research and development capabilities in the areas of Crew/Automation interactions, Avionics, Flight software Certification, Aviation Operations, Flight Dynamics, Guidance and Control, and Electromagnetics and Sensors research. He is responsible for implementing the Agency Technical Authority role, and assuring the technical quality of research and development products, for the five branches comprising the Airborne Systems technical discipline at the Langley Research Center. Previous positions include serving as the Acting Associate Director for Airborne Systems, RTD, from 2004 to 2006. During this time, Mr. Weathered also served a concurrent duty as the Acting Branch Head for the Crew Systems Branch, whose charter was to conduct the human/automation interaction research and flight deck research conducted at Langley. From 2002 to 2004, he was the Assistant Director for the Airborne Systems Competency. During this period, Mr. Weathered was concurrently appointed twice to lead the branches and activities comprising Langley’s research flight operations. From 1998 to 2002 he helped form, and served as the first Lead of, the Airworthiness and Configuration Management Office, which was responsible for all aircraft in the Langley inventory, including the ARIES Boeing 757. From 1989 to 1998, Mr. Weathered was a standard practice engineer in NASA Langley's Systems Engineering Division and, later, was an Operations and Airworthiness Engineer in the Flight Operations Support Division. Prior to joining NASA in 1989, Mr. Weathered was a systems engineer for the Boeing Military Aircraft Company, and a structural analyst for both LTV’s Kentron International and Microcraft, Inc. Mr. Weathered is an Associate Fellow of the AIAA, a council member of the AIAA Hampton Roads Section, and is the Chairman-elect of the AIAA Flight Testing Technical Committee. Mr. Weathered has received numerous individual and team awards during his NASA career, including the NASA Outstanding Leadership Medal. Mr. Weathered earned a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Missouri-Rolla, and he earned a Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Virginia. Additionally, Mr. Weathered is a graduate of the University of Southern California Aviation Safety Program, and holds Airline Transport Pilot, Commercial, Instrument Ground Instructor, and Flight Instructor-Instrument Licenses.
